Chihuahua Lifespan

Study median11.8 yrs10,788 UK dogs, 2024

A 2020 UK study of vet records found a median age at death of 8.2 years, with females at 10.2 and males at 6.9. That study covered a young, fast-growing population, which pulls the numbers down. UK life tables give 7.9 years at birth.

Quick answer

Chihuahuas are often said to live 14 to 16 years, the AKC’s range, but UK vet data is more mixed: a median of 11.8 years across 10,788 dogs. Females tend to outlive males, and heart disease, breathing problems and injuries are the leading causes of death.

Chihuahua life stages

Life stages follow the 2019 AAHA guidelines. The senior stage is the last 25% of expected life, so with a median lifespan of 11.8 years, a Chihuahua becomes a senior at about 8.9.

Senior start = 75% of the 11.8-year study median (AAHA 2019).
StageAgeWhat to focus on
Puppy0–6 monthsTiny puppies get hurt easily; keep them warm and supervise them around stairs, furniture and bigger dogs.
Young adultto 3 yearsStart brushing teeth now and ask your vet to check for baby teeth that haven’t fallen out.
Mature adult3–8.9 yearsWeigh your dog regularly; half a pound is a big change on a 6-pound frame.
Senior8.9+ yearsTwice-yearly checkups let your vet listen for new heart murmurs and keep on top of dental disease.

Common Chihuahua health problems

Heart disease

The AKC lists heart problems in Chihuahuas, including patent ductus arteriosus (a vessel that fails to close after birth) and mitral valve disease. In UK vet records, heart disease was the most common cause of death, at 18.8%.

Watch for: Coughing, tiring quickly on walks, fast breathing at rest, fainting.

Dental disease

Periodontal disease was the most common problem recorded in UK Chihuahuas, at 13.5%. Baby teeth that don’t fall out (retained deciduous teeth) were recorded in 5.7%.

Watch for: Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, dropping food, loose teeth.

Patellar luxation

The kneecap slips out of its groove. The AKC lists patellar luxation among the breed’s health issues and recommends a patella evaluation for breeding dogs.

Watch for: Skipping or hopping for a few steps, then walking normally; holding a back leg up.

Breathing problems

Disease of the lower airways and lungs was the second most common cause of death in UK Chihuahuas, at 16.3%.

Watch for: A cough that doesn’t go away, noisy or labored breathing.

Injuries

Trauma caused 13.8% of deaths in the UK study. Falls, being stepped on and fights with larger dogs are real dangers for a dog this small.

Why is there such a gap between male and female Chihuahuas?

A 2020 study of Chihuahuas in UK vet records found that females lived to a median of 10.2 years, while males reached only 6.9. Across all 155 breeds in the larger 2024 UK study, the gap between the sexes was just 0.3 years in favor of females.

The authors point out that the Chihuahua population they studied was young and had grown quickly in the years before. When a breed becomes popular fast, the dogs that have already died are mostly young ones, which pulls median ages down and can exaggerate differences between groups. The study reports the gap; it doesn’t prove why it exists.

What it means for you: treat the numbers as a snapshot, not a prediction. Male Chihuahuas can and do live long lives. The practical steps are the same for both sexes: prevent injuries, look after the teeth and get heart checks.

How to help your Chihuahua live longer

Make tooth care a daily habit

Dental disease is the most common problem in the breed. Brush with a dog toothpaste, and have your vet check the mouth at every visit, including for retained baby teeth.

Prevent falls and accidents

Pet steps up to the sofa or bed, a secure carrier in the car, and supervision around children and big dogs all reduce the injuries that end too many Chihuahua lives early.

Ask for a heart check at every visit

Your vet can hear many heart problems with a stethoscope before signs appear. Mention any new cough or tiredness straight away.

Keep weight steady

Obesity was recorded in 5.9% of UK Chihuahuas. Treats add up fast for a dog this small, so count them as part of the daily food.

Take breathing changes seriously

With airway and lung disease such a common cause of death, a persistent cough or noisy breathing deserves a vet visit rather than a wait-and-see.

What about “teacup” Chihuahuas?

“Teacup” isn’t a size in the Chihuahua breed standard. The AKC standard simply says a Chihuahua should not exceed 6 pounds; there is no separate category for extra-small dogs.

We found no reliable study of lifespan in unusually tiny Chihuahuas, so be wary of any lifespan claim in a teacup listing. What the data does show is that every Chihuahua is vulnerable to injuries, dental disease and heart problems, and a smaller body leaves even less margin.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Chihuahuas live?

Most live around 12 to 16 years. The AKC lists 14–16 years, and a 2024 UK study of 10,788 Chihuahuas found a median of 11.8 years.

Do female Chihuahuas live longer?

In a 2020 UK study, yes: females had a median age at death of 10.2 years and males 6.9. The study population was young, which may exaggerate the gap, but the difference was large.

What do Chihuahuas usually die from?

In UK vet records, the top causes of death were heart disease (18.8%), lower airway and lung disease (16.3%) and injuries (13.8%).

Is a teacup Chihuahua a different breed?

No. “Teacup” is a marketing term, not a size in the breed standard. The AKC standard says Chihuahuas should not exceed 6 pounds.

Why do Chihuahuas have so many dental problems?

Periodontal disease was the most common condition recorded in UK Chihuahuas (13.5%), and 5.7% had baby teeth that didn’t fall out. Daily brushing and regular dental checks make a real difference.

Is 9 old for a Chihuahua?

By AAHA’s definition, a dog is a senior in the last 25% of expected life. With a median of 11.8 years, that starts at about 9 for Chihuahuas. On the AKC chart for small dogs, a 9-year-old is about 52 in human years. Many Chihuahuas stay lively well past this age.
